Grand Opening of a State-of-the Art Astronomical Observatory in the Shoalhaven
The Shoalhaven Astronomers, in collaboration with the University of Wollongong, are thrilled to announce the grand opening of a newly constructed astronomical observatory. The project was made possible by a grant from the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Program. The state-of-the-art observatory is set to provide opportunities for visual observing and education in the region.
The grand opening of the observatory will take place at 5.30pm on 6th September 2023 at the University of Wollongong’s Shoalhaven Campus in Mundamia (west Nowra), commencing with a tour of the facility at 5.30pm. The official opening will take place at 6.00pm by the local State Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward. Other distinguished guests will be in attendance, and it should be noted the support given by Gareth Ward, Shelley Hancock and Fiona Phillips for the grant application and continued advocacy for the project.
The Shoalhaven Astronomers have worked tirelessly for the last 2 years to establish the observatory, aiming to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the universe for members and the general community. It will allow Shoalhaven Astronomers to improve its ability to showcase the astronomical wonders of the universe to the community by beaming images of major astronomical events to the safe and comfortable environment of a lecture theatre.
During the event, guests will have the opportunity to explore the observatory and witness its impressive equipment, including reflector and refractor telescopes and its advanced imaging and computer control functionalities. With the guidance of expert astronomers, visitors will gain insight into the capability of the observatory.
This occasion marks a milestone in the scientific landscape of the region and opens avenues for research, education and public engagement with astronomy. The Shoalhaven Astronomers and the University of Wollongong extend their sincere gratitude to the NSW state government, local politicians Gareth Ward, Shelley Handcock & Fiona Phillips, and the community for their unwavering support and contributions.
Members of the media, community leaders, and astronomy enthusiasts are cordially invited to attend this landmark event. We request all attendees to RSVP by 30th August 2023, by ringing the UOW Shoalhaven campus on 4448 0888 to ensure proper arrangements for the tour and ceremony.
